Bridgestone India To Revive Water Bodies Across 140 Acres Of Catchment Area In Madhya Pradesh
Aims for 1.5 Lakh Metric Tonnes of Groundwater Recharge in Dhar
Bridgestone India aims to recharge groundwater and rebuild biodiversity in water-stressed parts of Madhya Pradesh. Under its Project PRAVAAH, implemented by Society for Agriculture and Environmental Sustainability, three traditional water bodies across roughly 140 acres of catchment area in Dhar, Madhya Pradesh will benefit. Years of groundwater extraction have significantly contributed to water scarcity in these areas.
Dhar district had over the years faced acute water shortage as well as depletion of ground water resources. Groundwater extraction levels have approached or exceeded 100% of annual recharge, indicating unsustainable use. Groundwater levels have declined to 10–20 meters below ground level, particularly during pre-monsoon months, significantly affecting drinking water availability and irrigation.
Project PRAVAAH is driving water security, revitalizing local ecosystems, and empowering communities to thrive. It does this through nature-based restoration, on-ground community participation, and new livelihoods for marginalised women in the area. This adds to the organisation's existing biodiversity initiatives, including 9.5 acres of biodiversity parks and community gardens developed to foster environmental education, biodiversity awareness, and nature conservation.
This initiative aims at recharging up to 1.5 lakh metric tonnes of groundwater. That means steadier water for homes, livestock and farms nearby, a habitat that supports more biodiversity, and rural communities better placed to handle what climate change brings.
